OUGD502 Studio Brief 1 - Evaluation

OUGD502 Studio Brief 1 - Evaluation

This module I consider one of the most important as its so influential for my professional practice. Studio brief one was a really great way to begin delving into networking and engaging with professionals. The process and the outcome were both really beneficial as both gave useful opportunities. As networking is quite new to me, I was surprised at how just sending an email can really start conversations flowing. Networking is something that is crucial to my development and is something I’ve found to be really quite fun. Chatting and engaging with the professional world is something now which has captured me and spurred on my ambitions.

After sending quite a few emails, it was nice to get replies back, even if it was stating that unfortunately they had no time to do it. However, the three interviews I did get back were very versatile and all applied to my own interests. My reply from Shape was great as web design is something that I’ve unexpectedly found quite fun and something that I enjoy. So it was interesting to see how they came across especially about networking, which proves just how important it is.  Rabbit Hole was really beneficial as I love the work they produce.  In addition, the laid back, tone of voice in the reply I got shows the personality of the studio. Having recently visiting a design studio, I’ve found that they have a great, chilled working environment which I can see that Rabbit Hole has, and from this is definitely a studio I will keep in contact with and apply for an internship in the future. Mark commented in the interview about how creative degrees can restrict students and led them to produce work that although looks professional – fails to excite. This statement, I can definitely see to be true and think perhaps applies to me as I feel that my portfolio isn’t me at all and although I know what style and things I like – I feel this isn’t replicated in my work. Therefore, I have decided to take on more self initiated work and not overthink things, just experiment and be creative. Finally, I was very fortunate to get a response back from an artist I have admired for quite a few years now. Learning that Shae DeTar has established herself and become successful from having no prior degree or experience was really interesting, and I feel really lucky to have interviewed her.

All three of these who I interviewed all had the same thing in common – they self taught themselves. Some had graphic design degrees, some had none but all took a new opportunity and were self taught. This was really reassuring as I feel that graphic design can be such an open degree and I have always known myself that I want to take any opportunity that comes to me. I don’t feel restricted and am happy to try anything, just as my interviewees have – and this is how they have become successful.

As for the brief, I decided to create a zine which aims to help students learn how professionals started off, I want to continue this as I feel like there is a future for Establish. As the brief was open, I designed the three different issues in a style which I think has more of my own personality within them. This was purely from experimenting and is definitely a piece of work which I am quite proud of. This proves to me that taking on more self initiated work and experimenting more will really help my creative growth.

The process of emailing was fun, and I did intend to send letters out but as I got responses I didn’t. I do feel though that emailing is impersonal and doesn’t really make an impression. Therefore, I am going to send a copy of my creative reports to the studios along with a thank you letter to be more distinctive. Furthermore, as I have enjoyed this whole process, I want to continue Establish and really create it into a zine to follow my original aims of helping students/young creative. Asking more professionals for interviews is also a good way to continue speaking to people, and I can then look into selling Establish in various outlets as an own, personal project of mine.

OUGD502 Studio Brief 1 - Berlin - Can U Read Me

OUGD502 Studio Brief 1 - Berlin - Can U Read Me

We managed to find a really great book shop 'Can U Read Me' under recommendation from HORT. This was essentially like Village in Leeds which was great to see German independent publications. Flaneur Magazine really captured me, the layout inside was so different was use a kind of disgusting aesthetic which looked really good. It clearly didn't use any rules or guidelines and had a very post modern feel, this aesthetic is what I love. After Berlin I researched into Flaneur magazine and its quickly become a favourite of mine, working with this type of aesthetic is suited to me therefore I want to get in contact and ask questions with people who work for the magazine.

OUGD502 Studio Brief 1 - Berlin

The trip to Berlin was definitely such a great experience and not only great to explore but I feel like it also really inspired me creatively. Berlin has such a different vibe and the culture is so different, therefore creatively the design is so different. Its definitely a style I admire and Berlin seems to have a chilled out, bohemian vibe. It has made me consider living in Berlin and also the studio visit to HORT mad me consider working for a studio. I was always unsure about whether I wanted to work in a design studio but the working environment definitely suits me I feel. It was so laid back, and there were no set working hours and there was music playing - quite fitting for me. After this experience I definitely want to look into getting work experience at design studios and explore more cities.

OUGD502 Studio Brief 2 - Final Self Branding

OUGD502 Studio Brief 2 - Final Self Branding

This is what I chose to be my final design for my visual identity. I still feel that this is subject change however, therefore I didn't print out any business cards, this something I want to continue working on as its so important. I also chose not to create a portfolio as I feel that there are only a selected few pieces of my work that I would want to put on there - only recently when experimenting more have I created work which I would feel confident letting professionals see.  In addition, for creative CVs I feel its best to find work experience and placements and really place emphasis on what I have learnt from these, who I am and where I did my degree. I think its unnecessary to create a creative CV when I'm still discovering myself. However, I'm going to continue working on this and doing more self initiated work to build up my portfolio and  to network. I am quite happy with my current identity, and am looking forward to the constant development of my visual identity and growth as an individual.

OUGD502 Studio Brief 1 - Creative Report - Production

OUGD502 Studio Brief 1 - Creative Report - Production

The final printed outcome of the Establish came out really well and I'm happy with the outcome achieved. The stock particularly really made the zines and I was happily surprised at the printing quality and how well the photographs came out. I feel that there is a future for Establish and I want to continue it on to follow my original aims of helping students/young creative. Asking more professionals for interviews is also a good way to continue speaking to people, and I can then look into selling Establish in various outlets as an own, personal project of mine.

In terms of commercial application, the stock was quite cheap and by using my own paper, it only cost £1.50 per book. I would like to sell Establish (three individual zines, coming at £4.50 together) at £2.00 but that would instantly make a loss. I want the whole aesthetic to look quite cheap to produce, so charging around £5-6 would be far to much to pay on something I want students to be able to pick up quickly. This is something I will have to consider and look into to lift Establish off the ground.

OUGD502 Studio Brief 2 - Development

OUGD502 Studio Brief 2 - Development

As I struggling with branding myself, I made a mood board of styles that I admire to begin with. Unintentionally, pink is the chief colour within this, and coming to think of my work, pink is also a prominent colour within that as well. I considered myself to be a lover of colour but for business cards I think keeping it duotone may be best. I started to play around with type as I'd rather my logo be just my name. I believe people need logos and branding is also my weak spot, therefore playing with type and my name seemed the best alternative for me. That then turned to distorting type and to my surprise, found I quite enjoyed experimenting with type. From this, I found wavy distortions and felt that these experiments represented me as an individual and the style I like well - so I took this further using pastel pinks and red to ultimately create my next design identity.
